We caught up with this young comic who describes her sense of humour as racy Helouis "Weezil" Goraseb has been horning in her craft in both standup comedy and acting in the beautiful city of Windhoek , Namibia. How did you get into Standup Comedy and How long have you been performing?
I was helping a friend at university and he needed a few acts for his comedy show. I tried out i really enjoyed it and then started going to the Free Your Mind meetings to practice performance technique . That was 6 years ago!
What do you love most about being a standup comedian ?
Being able to express my views freely. It can be a huge responsibility but its also fun.
At what point would you say you have made it as a standup comedian?
I would have written a successful television show and have a bestseller book on the shelf , have sold out a show at the Apollo and taken over the tonight show from Trevor Noah, lol
Do you find that there are things you can not say as a stand up comedian ?
For me there is no such thing , however I am aware that the corporate side of our industry love a bit of censorship and they are very conservative.
Who are / is your inspiration ?
Anthony Jeselnik, Sarah Silverman and my dad. He is not a comedian but he is very confident and a great public speaker.
You recently had a baby , congratulations , how have you found juggling Comedy , being a mum and wife?
Taking it one day at a time, once my partner was the sound engineer at an event and baby Nirvana was backstage. I try to have it all linked with everyone i love close to me.
Do you perform Standup Comedy as a full time job ? If not what else do you do ?
I am also an actress!I l adore American actress Zoey deschanel i love her style and work . I find that actually being an actress allows me to be a comic, i apply a lot of stage principles .
What words of wisdom would you give to women looking to get into standup comedy ?
You look great dont worry to much about the guys, the hecklars. You are funny when you have fun and people want to hear what you have to say
